Mathematics

Our maths curriculum is delivered through the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation materials.

These cover the five 'big ideas' for effective maths teaching and learning:

Coherence: the learning progression enables pupil to develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematics that they can apply and communicate in a range of contexts.

Representation and Structure: a variety of of representations supports pupils to 'see' the mathematics rather than just as a tool to 'do' it. These become mental images that the pupils can use to think about and discuss mathematics, supporting them to achieve a deeper understanding of the structures and connections.

Mathematical Thinking: this occurs in all lessons as pupils discuss and communicate their ideas using precise mathematical language.

Fluency: the efficient, accurate recall of key number facts and procedures is essential for fluency, enabling pupils to think deeply about concepts and problems but also giving them the flexibility to move between different concepts and representations.

Variation: this supports pupils to identify and focus on a key feature of a mathematical concept or structure through varying some elements while keeping others constant. This 'real world' application of the mathematics will support pupils to use the mathematical skills and knowledge they have aquired in day to day life.

An overview of the progression can be viewed here.

For our Reception children, we follow the NCETM's Mastering Number Scheme. Mastering Number uses intentional teaching strategies to focus on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all children. Mastering Number continues as a daily session, in addition to the usual maths lessons, in Key Stage 1, to further embed fluency and number sense. More information can be found here.

All children also have a Doodle Maths account, and we encourage all children to log on at least three times a week.
